Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)

NIHL is hearing impairment resulting from exposure to loud sound. It can be caused by a one-time exposure to an intense “impulse” sound, such as an explosion, or by a continuous exposure to loud sounds over an extended period of time, such as noise generated at woodworking shops. In the modern world, recreational activities like listening to mp3 players at high volumes through headphones, attending loud concerts, bursting very loud firecrackers can put you at risk of NIHL. It is not uncommon for the ear drum to tear due to acute high intensity sound.

NIHL is the only type of hearing loss which is completely preventable. If you understand the hazards of noise and how to practice good hearing health, you can protect your hearing for life.
